Chanel Branch’s story is one of resilience, determination, and a deep commitment to serving her community. Born and raised in East Baltimore, Chanel is a proud graduate of Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, where she cultivated the values of hard work and perseverance that would define her career. As a devoted mother of three and grandmother, Chanel’s life experiences have shaped her into a leader who understands the struggles and aspirations of everyday families in Baltimore.

Her journey into public service was deeply personal. In 2017, Chanel faced the unimaginable tragedy of losing her son, Tyrone Ray, to gun violence. Rather than succumbing to grief, she transformed her pain into purpose, becoming an advocate for safer communities. She joined organizations like Safe Streets and Mothers of Murdered Sons & Daughters (MOMS), working tirelessly to support families impacted by violence and to push for meaningful change. Her advocacy led her to Annapolis, where she successfully lobbied for $3.6 million in funding to expand the Safe Streets program, bringing critical resources to neighborhoods in need.

In 2020, Chanel was appointed to the Maryland House of Delegates to represent the 45th District. During her tenure, she made an immediate and lasting impact by championing legislation that addressed the most pressing issues facing her constituents:

  • Public Safety: Chanel introduced groundbreaking legislation to establish specialized gun courts in Baltimore, aimed at reducing gun violence and ensuring justice for victims.
  • Economic Development: She secured $2.4 million in state investment for the 45th District and advocated for tax relief measures benefiting elderly residents, veterans, and small businesses.
  • Education: Chanel championed increased funding for regional resource centers and libraries while supporting financial literacy programs in public schools to prepare students for future success.

Chanel’s leadership extended beyond legislation. Her work as a community organizer and her roles in the Maryland Department of Human Services showcased her ability to connect with people on a personal level while addressing systemic challenges. As Deputy Chief of Administrative Operations, she continued her mission to improve lives through innovative solutions.

A Proven Champion in the Fight Against Gun Violence

Delegate Chanel Branch has been a key partner in Governor Wes Moore’s fight against gun violence in Maryland. She endorsed Moore’s commitment to public safety in a campaign ad, stating, “Wes Moore listens and he leads.” 

Their collaboration continues with Branch supporting initiatives like the Center for Firearm Violence Prevention and Intervention, aligning with the governor’s comprehensive approach to address this critical issue in Maryland communities.
